Ans. Bannister pretended to faint to give Gilchrist a chance to escape. He sat down at the corner chair to hide Gilchrist’s gloves.

Before his present job, Bannister was a butler at Gilchrist’s house. So, he had a soft corner for Gilchrist.

5. Why did … (For full question, refer to the book.)

II HOTS

Why couldn’t … (For full question, refer to the book.)

Ans. Everybody cannot do everything. Every work requires natural ability, aptitude and training for the work to be done with perfection.

Soames was a teacher, who specialised in academics. So, he could not solve the mystery. On the other hand, Holmes is a professional detective, specialising in solving mysteries and cracking cases of crime. But, even Holmes might not have matched Soames in academics.

III Life Skills

A. You have found … (For full question, refer to the book.)

Ans. The best thing to do in such a situation would be to hand over the pen drive back to the teacher. Cheating can fetch us good marks, but cannot help us gain knowledge. We study to gain knowledge, not just to get marks.

B. ‘All children … (For full question, refer to the book.)

Ans. Children are liable to make mistakes due to their lack of experience. However, if elders speak to children when they make mistakes, it will have better impact on children’s mind. Instead of scolding them, if they are spoken to with patience, children can realise what is right and what is wrong. Such a realisation will stop them from repeating the mistakes. This is a better way of handling children in their growing years.

IV Values

Was it right … (For full question, refer to the book.)

Ans. Yes, it was right to set Gilchrist free.

The motive behind giving punishment to the guilty is to make him realise his mistake. However, in this case, Gilchrist had already realised his mistake. He withdrew from the scholarship examination on his own. It shows that Gilchrist had learnt his lesson. Hence, there was no need to punish him any further.

V Writing Skills

A. Imagine yourself … (For full question, refer to the book.)
