Ans. Everybody cannot do everything. Every work requires natural ability, aptitude and training for the work to be done with perfection.

Soames was a teacher, who specialised in academics. So, he could not solve the mystery. On the other hand, Holmes is a professional detective, specialising in solving mysteries and cracking cases of crime. But, even Holmes might not have matched Soames in academics.

Ans. Yes, it was right to set Gilchrist free.

The motive behind giving punishment to the guilty is to make him realise his mistake. However, in this case, Gilchrist had already realised his mistake. He withdrew from the scholarship examination on his own. It shows that Gilchrist had learnt his lesson. Hence, there was no need to punish him any further.
